Thank you for taking a moment to read this.
We are Emergency Medicine resident physicians in Brooklyn.
We are at the epicenter of the pandemic.
One of the hospitals where we work has become one of three designated COVID-19 centers in the state of New York. The reality that our hospital staff and patients are facing is grim (CNN recently aired a special on what it's like inside our emergency room right now). We humbly carry the suffering and burden of our patients, yet we continue to run directly into the fire and show up in full force to care for our community.
As this onslaught continues, we hope to at least ensure that our emergency department residents are well supplied and fed. While much of the nation's workforce has gone remote, we are working harder than ever. We power through 12-hour shifts with minimal breaks and so many unknowns regarding this virus. Any days off are dedicated to capturing an elusive good night's sleep — an opportunity to recharge for the battle against an invisible enemy.
To our friends, family and community members who have generously donated meals to our unit, thank you. We cannot express enough how much we appreciate the overwhelming support you've shown us over the past few weeks. Right now, the opportunity to go grocery shopping or prepare meals for our shifts is rare, and these generous gestures of encouragement greatly help us get through another day — not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally.
If you would like to donate any specific items or if you have any additional questions, please email [email redacted].
Thank you again for all your support, kindness and generosity! Stay safe, be well and take care of each other.
