I’m raising funds for my parents after my dad was recently detained by ICE. My dad had been paying my $800 monthly tuition while I study medicine in México, and he and my mom were also covering the household bills. My mother worked for my dad’s company, so now that he has been detained, she is out of work too. In a very short time, my family lost the income that was keeping everything afloat, and everything has felt uncertain since then.
I dont currently live with my mom because I’m studying abroad, but I can see how much this is weighing on her. She is a very strong person and keeps telling my sisters and I that she is fine, but I see how stressed and tired she is. It is heartbreaking to watch her carry this burden while still trying to protect us and hold everything together at home.
The immediate need is to keep up with basic bills and essentials. One of the most urgent bills right now is the electrical bill, which is over $1,000 and coming due next week. Donations will also help cover the water bill, car notes, propane for the home heating system with winter getting close, and groceries for my mom and my little brother. I am also trying to receive a scholarship to help ease some of the financial stress, but right now there is still no way for us to keep up with these costs on our own.
Because these bills and household needs continue over time, ongoing support would make a real difference for my family as my mother tries to manage without my dad’s income and while she is out of work.
