Hello, my name is Leilani McAllister. I’m a college student at Skyline College studying computer science. I’m excited to share that I’ve been chosen to complete an internship in Ghana this summer through the San Mateo County Community College District's Global Internship Program. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me! Though this internship is unpaid, the experience will be invaluable. I am seeking support to help cover my program fees, travel costs, and expenses.
I’ve developed two specific goals to build upon during my college career: to accumulate the skills needed to become a tech professional and to grow my cultural identity. I see this internship as the catalyst to making significant progress in these goals of mine. During this internship, I’ll be working with a company related to my field of study, exposing me to an international perspective of the tech industry and aiding in my navigation to select a tech career that I believe to be aligned with my values.
Alongside growing in my professionalism and independence, I’ll be deepening my connection to my African heritage. As a biracial woman who was not raised alongside black relatives, this opportunity is imperative to developing my racial identity. This program provides a culturally packed itinerary of educational excursions that will let me fully immerse myself in Ghana’s vibrant culture.
I am incredibly grateful and excited to be chosen for this opportunity. However, I need your help to make this journey possible.
