Hi, my name is David Brumfield, but you might know me as Lagoona Bloo. I was lucky enough to be part of the original Off-Broadway cast of DRAG: The Musical from September 2024 through our closing in April 2025. And while that experience was a dream, unfortunately, singing 8 shows a week in addition to my weekly bar shows took its toll on my voice.
During our final week of performances, I sustained a vocal hemorrhage which developed into a pseudocyst—a small fluid-filled sac that sat on my vocal cords. The injury affected my entire upper register and my vocal stamina, which has severely impacted my income and my ability to work for the last 6 months. Even more than that though, singing is a huge part of my identity, and it’s very painful and scary to have such a large part of yourself out of commission like that.
In order to get my voice back to a healthy and sustainable place, I had to undergo vocal surgery to remove the lesion on Monday, November 10th. I am very grateful for my incredible team at the Sean Parker Institute of the Voice and even more so that a majority of my medical expenses have been covered by insurance! The surgery was a success and now I am on the long road to recovery.
While having an operation on my voice is scary enough, what’s almost scarier is that I will be without my voice—my main source of income—for eight weeks following the surgery. I, like most of us, hate asking for help. And like many, I grew up having to rely solely on myself. But, I also feel confident that my community can be a soft place to land. I would be so appreciative for any financial help you can spare to aid me in surviving these next few months without work.
Thank you always for your kindness and generosity; every dollar, and more importantly, every thought behind it, makes a huge difference, and I am so grateful to be part of such a tight-knit, supportive, beautiful community.
I’ll see you in eight weeks, but until then—all my love, and all my thanks
~ Lagoona Bloo
