Meet Josiah - A Young Man Fighting for His Future
My name is Veronica Suber, and I'm raising funds for my grandson Josiah (known to friends as "Arrow"), who has been battling sickle cell disease his entire life. This devastating inherited blood disorder has stolen too many opportunities from this brave young man - countless hospitalizations for blood transfusions and pain management have made it impossible for him to maintain steady employment, despite his strong desire to work and support himself.
A Heartbreaking Loss, A Ray of Hope
Our family recently faced an unimaginable tragedy. Josiah's mother - my daughter-in-law Alicia Suber - passed away from complications of sickle cell disease in June 2025. Suddenly, Josiah and his brother James found themselves homeless. As their grandmother, I immediately opened my home to them, though it has stretched my limited fixed income to the breaking point. I couldn't bear the thought of them having nowhere to go during such a difficult time.
But in the midst of this darkness, we received incredible news: Josiah has been accepted into the BEAM-101 gene therapy clinical trial at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). This groundbreaking treatment could finally free him from the cycle of pain, hospitalizations, and lost opportunities that has defined his life.
What is BEAM-101 Gene Therapy?
BEAM-101 is a cutting-edge gene therapy treatment that could cure Josiah's sickle cell disease. Recent clinical trial results show that all patients treated achieved:
• Hemoglobin F induction of over 60%
• Reduction of sickle hemoglobin to less than 40%
• Complete resolution of anemia
This isn't just treatment - it's potentially a cure. But the road to recovery requires intensive care and significant financial resources our family simply doesn't have.
Treatment Start Date: 09/09/2025 Recovery Period: 6-12 months
The BEAM-101 process involves intensive chemotherapy that will completely destroy Josiah's immune system before rebuilding it with gene-corrected cells. During this critical period, he'll be extremely vulnerable to any infection or contamination.
