Help Jackie & Abe Rebuild After Catastrophic Flood Loss and Insurance Denial
Hi, my name is Gabby. I’m starting this fundraiser for my sister Jackie, her boyfriend Abe, and their pets Archie (dog) and Oreo (cat), who live in Burnet, Texas, along Hamilton Creek.
In the early morning hours of July 5th, around 5 a.m., Jackie and Abe awoke to the terrifying sound of water rushing into their home. They stepped out of bed into rising floodwaters nearly knee-deep, with their bedroom floor already lifting. Grabbing Archie and trying to scoop up Oreo (who jumped and ran), they fled into the pouring rain and fast-moving water, climbing the hill to a neighbor’s house.
Once Jackie was safe, Abe went back to try and move one of their trucks. But by then, the water had risen to his chest (he’s 6 ft tall). When he opened the truck door, the current swept it away and nearly took him with it. Miraculously, he managed to grab hold of the carport and swim to safety.
While we are incredibly thankful that Jackie and Abe are safe, their home, vehicles, and Abe’s workshop are a total loss.
This home was Abe’s pride and joy—he bought the property at just 20 years old and spent the past two decades pouring his heart, hard work, and dreams into making it his forever place. Jackie moved there last year, and together they built a home they were so proud to share with family and friends. It was their gathering place—karaoke on the back porch, swimming in the pool under the Texas sun, riding mopeds around the yard… They were doing exactly that the night before. Within hours, everything was gone.
The flooding in Burnet and across Texas has been devastating. So many lives have been affected or lost. We are counting our blessings that Jackie and Abe made it out alive—but now they’re starting from basically nothing.
To make matters worse, their insurance is covering NOTHING. After 20 years of faithfully paying, with barely any claims, they were told their policy doesn’t cover flood damage—and the company refused to even come inspect the property. Because this kind of flooding had never happened in the area, flood insurance didn’t seem necessary… until now.
They left with only the clothes on their backs. Friends, family, and neighbors have rallied around them, and I’m doing what I can from afar here in Wisconsin—setting up this GoFundMe to help them start rebuilding their lives. If you’re able to contribute anything at all, every dollar will go directly to Jackie and Abe to help them recover. And if you’re not in a position to donate, even sharing this fundraiser would mean the world—it may reach someone who can help.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for reading, for sharing, and for supporting two people who have lost so much but are holding onto hope.
With love and gratitude, Gabby
