Hi everyone! My name is Davani Melendez, and I’m a senior at the University at Albany, graduating in Fall 2026.

Since coming to UAlbany, I’ve worked relentlessly to help cover the costs that come with being a college student. I’ve received scholarships, worked as a facility attendant at my campus gym, taught dance classes for the UAlbany community, and served as a Resident Assistant, which was a huge help to my family with housing costs.

I’ve also been involved in several campus organizations that mean a lot to me — I’ve proudly represented UAlbany as a Purple & Gold Ambassador and have been an intern with UAlbany Dining for almost two years. Between classes, rehearsals for the play I’m in, and all my jobs, life can definitely get crazy, but I’ve always loved being involved and doing everything I can to make the most out of my time here.

Now that I’m halfway through my senior year, I feel ready to take what I’ve learned and experience something completely new — abroad. I’ll be studying in Spain from January 2026 to May 2026, and then coming back home just in time to walk the stage and receive my bachelor’s degree. I’ve never been to Europe, but I’ve always wanted to be immersed in a new culture and push myself to grow in ways I can’t in a classroom. Taking Spanish classes at UAlbany has prepared me for this, and I’ve dreamed of returning fluent— something that would make my Latino parents extremely proud.

I know that studying abroad is a luxury, and I don’t take that for granted. I’ve applied to numerous scholarships and grants, and I’ve been trying to pick up extra shifts whenever possible, but with school, work commitments, and my schedule, it’s been challenging to earn enough. The program costs $12,500 upfront, not including tuition, airfare, food, or housing, and there’s unfortunately no payment plan.

So, I’m asking for some help- from anyone who’s willing to support me in making this dream a reality. Anything truly helps, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. This opportunity would mean so much to me. Not just because it’s a chance to travel, but because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to grow, learn, and represent everything I’ve worked for before I graduate.
