Britagne's Continued Fight for Her Life
Important Update:
Many of you have been following Britagne's journey through our original GoFundMe. Unfortunately, we ran into some issues with the original fundraiser, and after working with GoFundMe, we were asked to create a new campaign. GoFundMe will soon transfer everything from the original campaign to the new one.
Because of that, we are sharing her story again, along with the many updates that have happened since this medical battle began.
We are incredibly grateful for everyone who has supported, donated, shared, and prayed for our family throughout this journey. Your kindness has carried us through some of our darkest days.
It has taken everything in us to ask for help, but today we are sharing our family's story in the hope that we can continue this fight together.
Meet Britagne
My wife, Britagne, is the strongest person I have ever known.
She is an incredible wife, a devoted mother to our four beautiful children, and the heart of our family.
If you've met her, you know she is the kind of person who always puts others first. She loves the outdoors, staying active, working out, helping others, and living life to the fullest.
Her servant's heart has touched countless lives.
Now she is facing the greatest challenge of her own.
Britagne and I have four amazing children
They are her entire world.
She deserves to be here for every graduation, every milestone, every future wedding, and one day to meet the grandchildren we have always dreamed about.
How This All Began
What began as what appeared to be a simple spider bite on May 28 quickly became a life-threatening medical crisis.
On June 4, Britagne was admitted to Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kansas, where doctors discovered a massive hematoma in her right calf.
The pain was excruciating.
She underwent emergency surgery to remove large blood clots and drain the area.
As doctors fought to save her leg, another devastating reality emerged.
The severe infection, repeated surgeries, massive blood loss, and overwhelming strain on her body took a devastating toll on her liver.
What began as a medical emergency quickly spiraled into a much larger crisis as her liver function continued to decline, leading to end-stage liver disease and a long list of life-threatening complications that she continues to battle today.
The combination of severe liver failure, infection, and bleeding disorders created a perfect storm.
Doctors warned us that surgery itself could be fatal due to her inability to clot properly.
At one point, multiple physicians told us she might only have days to a month to live and recommended hospice care.
But Britagne refused to give up.
She spent 10 days in the MICU, additional time in the Cardiac ICU, underwent multiple procedures, received countless blood transfusions, plasma, platelets, cryoprecipitate, antibiotics, blood clotting aids and other lifesaving treatments.
She developed gram-negative and staph infections that caused tissue necrosis around her surgical wound, requiring even more procedures and aggressive treatment.
Against incredible odds, Britagne survived.
The Fight Isn't Over
But surviving was only the beginning.
The truth is that Britagne is still fighting for her life every single day.
Many people hear that someone has come home from the hospital and assume things are getting better.
We wish that were true.
Instead, our lives have become a constant cycle of appointments, procedures, hospitalizations, setbacks, and uncertainty.
We never know when the next phone call, lab result, infection, or symptom will turn into another medical emergency.
Just when it feels like we can finally take a breath, another crisis appears.
No family is ever prepared for a life like this.
The Reality of Life Today
Most days are consumed by medical care.
Between specialists, wound care, lab work, physical therapy, home health visits, transplant evaluations, neurological appointments, and frequent hospital stays, Britagne often has two to three medical appointments every single day.
Over the past few weeks alone, she has been admitted to the ICU twice because her sodium levels dropped to critically low, life-threatening levels.
What should have been routine follow-up care became medical emergencies requiring hospitalization and intensive monitoring.
Recently, she was dealt yet another setback when doctors discovered another staph infection.
Because of her liver disease, compromised immune system, and bleeding disorders, even infections that might be manageable for others can quickly become life-threatening for her.
It often feels like every time we get through one crisis, another one takes its place.
The physical pain is overwhelming.
But the emotional pain can be even harder.
There are days when Britagne spends hours moving from one appointment to another only to come home carrying more difficult news.
There are nights when pain keeps her awake.
There are nights when fear keeps her awake.
There are moments when she quietly wonders how much more her body can endure.
Moments when she wonders whether she will be here to watch our children grow up.
As her husband, there have been countless moments where I have felt completely helpless.
I've sat beside her ICU bed wondering if she would survive the night.
I've watched doctors rush in and out during emergencies.
I've heard conversations no spouse ever wants to hear.
I've watched the strongest woman I know endure unimaginable suffering while somehow continuing to fight.
There is nothing more heartbreaking than watching someone you love suffer and knowing you cannot take that pain away.
Yet somehow, she keeps going.
She keeps showing up.
She keeps enduring procedures.
She keeps fighting.
Because she wants to be here for her family.
The Loss of Independence
What makes this so difficult isn't just the diagnoses.
It's the loss of independence.
The wound in Britagne's leg continues to require extensive treatment. Large portions of muscle were removed, leaving a deep wound with tunnels extending throughout her calf. Despite months of treatment, doctors recently had to surgically reopen portions of the wound because the surface was healing faster than the deeper areas underneath, creating a risk of trapping infection.
She continues to depend on a wound vac and frequent wound care procedures to keep the infection under control and encourage healing.
At the same time, she is living with severe nerve damage in her right hand and right foot. Her right hand remains largely numb and unusable, making even simple daily activities difficult. Testing has shown severe muscle atrophy and polyneuropathy, and doctors continue to search for answers.
Today she often needs help with:
• Getting dressed
• Buttoning clothing
• Washing her hair
• Preparing meals
• Driving
• Opening containers
• Holding a fork
• Writing notes
• Managing medications
• Walking safely
Even changing clothes can be a challenge because of the wound vac tubing, pain, swelling, and limited use of her hand.
For someone who has always been active, independent, organized, and caring for everyone else, needing help with basic daily tasks has been heartbreaking.
The woman who once cared for everyone around her now struggles with many things most of us take for granted.
The physical exhaustion is overwhelming.
The emotional exhaustion is just as heavy.
The Impact on Our Family
This has taken a tremendous toll on our children.
They have watched their mom go from being the active center of our family to someone battling for her life every day.
They have witnessed ambulance rides.
ICU stays.
Surgeries.
Unbearable pain.
And endless doctor's appointments.
They have watched her come home from the hospital only to return days later.
They have seen medical equipment become part of our everyday lives.
They have heard conversations children should never have to hear.
They have seen fear in the faces of the people who love them most.
Most heartbreaking of all, they have had to wonder whether their mom is going to be okay.
No child should have to carry that fear.
No child should have to watch their parent fight for their life.
Yet our children face that reality every day.
They have shown strength beyond their years, but they are still just children who desperately want their mom to get better.
As her husband, I have remained by her side through every hospitalization, appointment, and setback while trying to care for our children and keep our family together.
During this medical crisis, I lost my job because there was simply no way to maintain a normal work schedule while caring for Britagne and being present for our family.
The financial burden has been overwhelming.
The emotional burden has been just as difficult.
We are also incredibly grateful for Britagne's mother, Sheila, who traveled from Utah to help care for Britagne, support our children, and carry us through some of our most difficult days.
How You Can Help
The past several months have changed every aspect of our lives.
What began as a medical emergency has become a daily battle filled with hospitalizations, surgeries, infections, specialist appointments, ICU stays, and constant uncertainty.
Our family has spent countless hours in hospitals and doctors' offices while trying to maintain some sense of normalcy for our children.
As Britagne continues fighting for her life and working toward becoming eligible for a liver transplant, the emotional, physical, and financial burdens continue to grow.
We have always tried to face life's challenges on our own.
Asking for help is not easy.
But the reality is that this journey has become bigger than anything we could have prepared for.
Every day is focused on helping Britagne heal, managing her medical needs, caring for our children, and holding our family together through circumstances we never expected to face.
We are reaching out because this fight has become bigger than our family can carry alone.
Funds raised will help with:
• Medical expenses and ongoing treatments
• Hospitalizations and ICU stays
• Home health nursing and wound care supplies
• Physical therapy and occupational therapy
• Specialist appointments and transplant evaluations
• Transportation to medical appointments
• Prescription medications
• Housing and utility costs
• Groceries and daily living expenses
• Support for our four children
• Temporary housing and relocation expenses related to transplant care
Every donation, no matter the amount, gives our family one less thing to worry about while Britagne fights for her life.
It allows us to focus on what matters most:
Keeping Britagne alive.
Helping her heal.
Being present for our children.
Holding onto hope.
If you are unable to donate, we completely understand.
Please consider sharing our story and praying for Britagne.
Those gifts mean more to us than words can express.
Looking Forward
Britagne's dream remains the same:
To become stable enough to qualify for a liver transplant.
To regain her strength.
To reclaim her independence.
To return to the life she loves.
Unfortunately, she is still not eligible for placement on the UNOS transplant waiting list.
Before that can happen, doctors must stabilize her lab values, improve her coagulation issues, address her ongoing infections, evaluate her neurological symptoms, and determine how to safely proceed with additional surgeries, including the removal of her gallbladder.
Every appointment.
Every procedure.
Every treatment.
Every setback.
It is all part of the fight to keep her alive and give her a chance at receiving the transplant she desperately needs.
Some days hope feels hard to find.
But she keeps fighting anyway.
And so do we.
Despite everything she has endured, Britagne continues to prove the odds wrong.
Her faith, determination, and love for her family remain stronger than ever.
We believe God has carried us this far for a reason, and we continue to trust Him with every step ahead.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for every prayer, every share, every donation, every encouraging message, and every act of kindness.
Your support reminds us that even during our darkest days, we are not walking this road alone.
With love and gratitude,
The Miller Family ❤️
