My name is Brian Wilson, and nearly three decades ago, in September of 1997, I made the decision to donate one of my kidneys to my father at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. It's one of my life's proudest moments ( see enclosed news article).
At that time, I simply wanted to help save my father’s life.
Today, I find myself in the unexpected position of needing a kidney transplant myself.
I am currently on the transplant waiting list at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta and expect to be added to the transplant list at UAB Hospital in Birmingham (site of original transplant) very soon. My greatest hope is to receive a transplant before dialysis becomes necessary.
This journey has brought enormous emotional, physical, and financial challenges. During the transplant and recovery period, I will need assistance with transportation to and from hospitals, medications and medical expenses not covered by insurance, and basic living expenses during recovery, which may last at least three months.
I have spent my life as an educator and mentor. I am an experienced teacher who deeply values human connection, compassion, and lifelong learning. My students have always inspired me, and I have dedicated my career to helping others grow and believe in themselves.
Now, I humbly ask for help myself.
