Support Access to Life-Saving Care at Kaloleni Hospital

During our recent time volunteering in the labour ward at Kaloleni Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania, we experienced something truly life-changing. We had the honour of standing beside incredible midwives and doctors as they welcomed new life into the world—often with compassion and skill that far outweighed the tools and resources available to them. We saw strength. We saw resilience. We saw love. What we witnessed was beautiful, but also heartbreaking.

Because alongside those moments of joy, we saw the brutal reality of healthcare inequality.
Hospitals like Kaloleni are often a place where basic medical supplies are in short supply, where critical equipment must be shared or simply doesn’t exist, and where healthcare providers are forced to do the very best they can with far too little.

No functioning blood pressure monitors. No phototherapy lights. No neonatal CPAP machines. No thermometers, pulse oximeters, stethoscopes or even reliable access to gloves, masks, or sanitary pads.
What we would consider basic tools—the bare minimum for safe care—are simply not there.

In this context, something as small as a working thermometer can be the difference between early treatment and dangerous delay. A blood pressure monitor can mean catching preeclampsia before it becomes fatal. Clean gloves can prevent life-threatening infection. These aren’t extras. These are essentials. Without them, every day becomes a fight between safety and risk, between success and failure, between life and death.

That’s why we have started this fundraiser—not just to give back to the hospital that taught us so much, but because we now understand just how far even a small contribution can go. What may seem modest to us can mean the difference between safe monitoring during labour or none at all; between a premature baby receiving phototherapy or struggling without it.

Initially, funds raised will go toward essential equipment and supplies, including:

  • Dynamap blood pressure monitors with multiple cuff sizes
  • Phototherapy lamps for the soon-to-be-built NIC
  • CPAP machines for newborns with breathing difficulties
  • Oxygen masks for newborns (multiple sizes)
  • Pulse oximeters, contactless thermometers, and other essential monitoring tools.
  • Birthing balls, peanut balls, and post-labour care supplies
  • General sanitation supplies including pads, gloves, masks, and other sanitary products

This effort aims to go beyond simply equipment. After years of steady progress, childhood vaccinations—which have helped reduce preventable illness and death and lowered the pressure on the already overburdened healthcare system—are no longer fully funded. Without continued funding, that hard-earned progress is at risk of reversing, and illness, suffering, and child mortality will rise once again—simply because of where a child is born. If this policy to cease funding changes, your donations will instead go toward continuing to strengthen and equip this hospital.

This fundraiser won’t solve every challenge—but we know now, more than ever, that every small effort matters. A single donation can ease a birth, protect a child, or give healthcare workers the tools they need to keep doing their incredible work. This isn’t just about equipment. It’s about showing up for people. Everyone deserves access to care. Everyone deserves the chance to live a safe, healthy life—no matter where they are born.

If this story moves you—please consider joining us. Your generosity will not be forgotten. It will live on in every child safely delivered, every mother cared for, every life held a little closer to hope.
In a world that often feels divided, this is something we can do together.

Thank you for reading, for caring, and for standing with the staff and families of Kaloleni Hospital.
