My name is Kirk, and I am raising funds for my sister, Cherie, and her children after the shocking attack that occurred in Melbourne’s CBD on Tuesday, 25 August 2026.
Cherie had travelled to Melbourne with her children as part of the ongoing monitoring and treatment of her 10-year-old son’s brain tumour.
While they were in the city, her 10-year-old son was punched in the side of the head and knocked to the ground by a stranger. When Cherie stepped in to protect him, she was violently attacked and stabbed four times.
As a result of the attack, Cherie suffered four stab wounds, ligament damage to her neck and shoulder, and a fractured leg. Her son was also taken for medical assessment after being punched in the head.
Thankfully, they survived, but the physical and emotional impact on the family has been significant.
Cherie is a single mother and is not currently working, so she has very limited financial flexibility to absorb the unexpected costs and disruption caused by this attack. At the same time, she must continue supporting her son through his ongoing cancer treatment and monitoring, while caring for her other children and recovering from her own injuries.
We are raising funds to help ease some of the financial pressure on Cherie and her family during this difficult period. Donations will help with everyday living expenses, travel to and from Melbourne for medical appointments, recovery-related costs, support for the children, counselling or other services that may be needed, and any additional expenses that arise over the coming weeks and months.
At this stage, we do not know exactly what the full recovery process will involve, which is why this support will mean so much to the family.
We are incredibly grateful to the members of the public who stepped in to help during the attack, to the emergency services and medical teams who cared for them, and to everyone who has reached out with messages of support.
Any donation, no matter the amount, will help. If you are not in a position to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser. Sharing not only helps support Cherie and her children, but also helps raise awareness of the devastating impact that random acts of violence can have on victims and their families.
Thank you for supporting Cherie and her children while they recover and continue facing the challenges ahead.
