Wheelchairs for kids in Panama

On our most recent trip to Panama, we had the pleasure of exploring the Ngobe Bugle Village at Salt Creek. The indigenous village consists of about 2000 people who collectively live and maintain land on the island of Bastamientos in the Bocas Del Toro province. We were traveling with our 13-year-old son Joaquin who uses an adapted Jogger stroller when we travel because of his complex special needs. With this stroller, we can access areas we couldn't possibly get to with a wheelchair. The man who was guiding us around the village mentioned that there were a couple of families with kids like my son and invited us to go meet them. The first child was a 17-year-old-year-old boy who presented with what appeared to be Cerebral palsy and Autism. He is cared for by his grandparents but has not been able to leave his house for 5 years because they have no way to transport him. He is receiving very good care with the limited abilities they have. There is a baseball field at the center of the village where the community events are held and they would like to be able to take him there. The second child was Marianna and she is 8 years old. She has presents a lot like my son, very low muscle tone and is not able to sit up on her own. But she has the sweetest brightest smile and her single mom is doing an excellent job caring for her. She will soon be too big to carry around and the mom said she would use a stroller to help her get to and from appointments on the main island. Although there are many groups that help to distribute medical equipment in developing nations none of them provide off-road strollers like these two kids would need to get around. The stroller for Fito is particularly expensive as he is an adult size and needs a well-built and heavy-duty stroller to get around. I have worked with a mobility specialist at National Seating and Mobility to determine the best strollers to use. My husband will take them by plane to Panama and get them to the kids as the cost of shipping was almost as much as the strollers. Thank you so much for your help.
