On this Monday my family received the worst news. My dad was readmitted to the hospital before Thanksgiving from what we thought were complications from his esophageal surgery & he was sitting in the hospital for two weeks declining mentally & physically. After he was written off as depressed my mom, knowing him, pushed for tests & they found that the cancer has spread & metastasized in my dad’s brain.

The last 48 hours have been a whirlwind

of information of trying to figure out next steps. Monday evening the brain tumors were found & he was moved to the Neurological ICU. Tuesday was spent running tests, placing a drain to relieve the pressure on his brain, finding out there are over 30 tumors all over the brain & discussing with the surgeon that surgery to remove the tumors is not an option. Today we came up with a plan to have a shunt placed Friday, moving him to Atrium hospital & starting full brain radiation Monday or Tuesday next week. This is not a cure & is just a way we can get him back to himself mentally to spend more time with him & make him comfortable. Our goal is to get him home with palliative care.

Even though he already fought so hard during his first battle he is still giving it his all now. He is telling us he wants to fight & be home with his family as soon as he can.

There are many risks & it’s not going to be easy.

My mom is missing work & has spent hours in the car going to & from Miami Valley hospital, he still has the horrid insurance that he was left with after being forced out of his job & his deductible for his medical bills will reset on January first. We didn’t start the journey thinking we were going to lose our dad/papaw/brother/husband and after thinking he was nearing the end of his cancer treatment we are now preparing for the end of his life.
