Let me introduce myself: I’m Darlene Graley (some may still remember me as Darlene Rosario), and what began as a magical reconnection with my old friend Dale has become a testament to how fate and fierce love can light the way through the darkest times.

Imagine this: on September 30th, 2021, a single, unexpected phone call reignited a friendship—and sparked a marathon, 24-hour conversation that changed our lives. There was laughter and tears, dreams shared and memories revived. By the time Dale hung up, his flight to see me was already booked. The anticipation was electric, our hearts counting down the days.

When Dale arrived, the universe smiled. By October 15th, 2022, he’d proposed on a cruise ship surrounded by our cheering family and friends. Exactly a year later, we said “I do” on a sunlit Florida beach, our eyes set on a future full of hope.

But just as our dreams began to take flight, our world was shaken to its core. In June 2024, Dale was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. The cancer had spread to his liver. We were scared, overwhelmed, and suddenly facing a mountain no couple ever expects.

But here’s the thing about us—we don’t back down. We researched, we fought, we clung to hope. There were days when Dale worked through chemo, and days when all we had was each other and a stubborn belief in tomorrow. Against the odds, Dale went into remission for a time, and we dared to dream again—moving back to Florida for new opportunities, new medical hope, and a fresh start by the sea.

Then, another blow: the cancer came back, just as we were building our new life. The treatments grew harder. The pain increased. But we are not giving up. We have found hope at the Moffitt Center in Florida, and we are determined to chase every possibility, every clinical trial, every sunrise we have left together.

At the same time, we were already dealing with uncertainty, as a company merger threatened Dale’s job, and I had just retired. The thought of losing his job, and with it our health insurance, was terrifying. That was over a year ago.

Despite the storm, we pressed on. Dale underwent his first year of treatments while managing to stay on as a contractor with the new company, which meant we could keep our medical insurance and maintain the stability of our home. Eventually, though, the treatments took too much of a toll, and Dale could no longer work. We turned to disability benefits, believing this would see us through, only to find his claim denied due to pre-existing conditions. Now, we’re waiting on SSDI assistance, which has its own five-month waiting period—a long time when bills don’t wait.

Still, we remain hopeful. We’ve moved back to Florida, grateful to still have our home, but I’ve yet to find steady work. The reality is that every month is a new test. Here’s where your donations make the difference:
