Shirley Taylor lost her home to the Eaton Fire
Donation protected
I was deeply conflicted about sharing my mother’s story or discussing her profound loss during the recent Eaton Fire in Altadena, California. However, after processing my thoughts, traveling to the remains of our family home, and speaking with my mother, I want to share with you.
On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, my mother lost her home of 47 years to fire. Her name is Shirley Taylor. She did evacuate on time and is temporarily staying at a hotel in Orange County, California which is not in danger from the Eaton Fire. Not only was her beloved 1907 Craftsman home destroyed, but all of her possessions, including family pictures, family heirlooms, and all of the artwork and cards from my childhood.
Shirley Taylor planted deep roots in the Altadena area and despite her retirement from the Federal civil service, regularly opened up her home to cook for friends, old and new. Next week, Shirley will turn 76 years old and I won’t allow this tragedy to overshadow her contribution to the community. Shirley is but 4’11”, but stands tall in her faith and is determined to rebuild.
Many folks have reached out to help and I hope collectively, to soften the impact of this unthinkable loss. Thank you for listening.
