Here in Costa Rica, our local beaches (Esterillos Oeste, Esterillos Centro, Esterillos Este, and Playa Bejuco) are nesting grounds for sea turtles. We are raising money to buy an ATV to be used by the turtle patrol so that they can rescue turtle eggs before the poachers get them! This extremely important effort allows us to ensure that the endangered turtle population has a fighting chance. Without our efforts, the poachers take every turtle egg on the beach, every night. Why? Turtle eggs are considered an aphrodisiac.
Jorge Bolandi will be the recipient of the ATV. A super honest local, he manages the turtle hatchery where retrieved eggs are kept until they hatch. On release days, the community is invited to watch the baby turtles make their way to the ocean in Esterillos Oeste. The ATV will allow Jorge to patrol all the beaches between Esterillos Oeste and Bejuco!
During the rest of the year, when the turtles are not nesting, the ATV will be used by the lifeguards so they are quickly able to get to locations where people are drowning (rip tides here take an average of 4-5 people per beach per year!)
