Save my family from going homeless
I must make this house liveable before 2026, or else we'll be living on the street.
Hi, I'm Marius, a 61-year-old divorced man, father of Moni and Zinho. My daughter and son are University students still dependent on me and their mother. Moni lives with me, Zinho with their mother (but stays over often). Moni and I live in a rented apartment in Porto, Portugal, with lease ending in 1 January 2026.
I struggle financially. In 2024 my income has became insufficient for our living expenses. I started eating into my meager savings —which at this pace will be depleted before the end of 2025. In 2026 my income may be even lower.
The greatest expense is rent (the running rent is already too high: the values of new contracts are through the roof). If I could get rid of that expense, we would be okay. And the only way not to pay rent is to be the owner. So, I went for that solution: in 2024 I bought this old house, in the country (Cafede, Castelo Branco), needing reformation—the only option I could afford with the little savings I had. (I paid hard cash, no mortgage; I am free of debt and want to stay that way.)
I started doing the reformation myself, since I'm good at making things, at acquiring new knowledge, and already had some tools and materials. The remainder necessary items I buy (2nd hand if possible), or reclaim, or recover for free. I buy a few services or hire helpers only for specific jobs that require them.
This was going well until recently, when some unexpected things happened in our life that have set back the project for many months (and took big bytes off the savings). Now I fear I cannot make the house liveable in time with the current approach: Do-It-Yourself with reclaimed materials takes time. I could expedite the build by hiring out a few more services, or buy a large van (2nd hand), or new materials, or any combination thereof. Only, I don't have the money for any of those.
So, we turn to you, dear givers. At the moment, I really don't see any other way of avoiding homelessness by 1 January 2026. Still waiting for some quotes from suppliers, but a rough estimate, for the minimum target of rendering the house livable by the end of 2025, is: 15'000 euros.
That is still with a good amount of DIY, and for only one of the three storeys planned, but it would make sure that we don't become homeless by 1 January 2026. With your help, we can do this.

Tenho de tornar esta casa habitável antes de 2026, para não ficarmos sem abrigo.
Olá, sou o Marius, 61 anos, divorciado, pai da Moni e do Zinho. Os meus filhos são estudantes universitários ainda dependentes de mim e da mãe. A Moni vive comigo, o Zinho vive com a mãe (mas fica connosco frequentemente). A Moni e eu vivemos num apartamento alugado em Porto, Portugal, cujo contrato termina em 1 janeiro 2026.
Estou com dificuldades financeiras. Em 2024 o meu rendimento tornou-se insuficiente para as nossas despesas correntes. Comecei a ratar as minhas magras poupanças, que por este andar estarão esgotadas antes do fim de 2025. Em 2026 o meu rendimento poderá ser ainda inferior.
A maior despesa é a renda da casa (o presente valor é já demasiado elevado; os novos contratos têm valores astronómicos). Se eu conseguisse eliminar essa despesa, ficaríamos bem. A única maneira de não pagar renda é ser o proprietário. Então, fui por esta solução: em 2024 comprei esta casa velha, no interior (Cafede, Castelo Branco), a necessitar de obras — a única opção que permitia a minha carteira. (Comprei a pronto, sem empréstimo; não tenho dívidas e quero continuar assim.)
Comecei as obras eu próprio, pois sei fazer coisas, aprender novas, e já tinha algumas ferramentas e materiais. Os restantes itens necessários, compro (em segunda mão se possível), ou recolho de graça, ou recupero. Compro alguns serviços, ou contrato ajudantes, só para trabalhos pontuais que tal requeiram.
Isto estava a correr bem, até que certos imprevistos aconteceram na nossa vida, fazendo atrasar o projecto vários meses (e tirando grandes porções da poupança). Agora, temo não conseguir tornar a casa habitável a tempo com a presente abordagem: faça-você-mesmo com materiais recolhidos leva tempo. Seria possível acelerar o processo pagando alguns serviços, ou adquirindo uma carrinha (em segunda mão), ou materiais novos, ou uma combinação destas coisas. O problema é que não tenho dinheiro para nada isso.
Então, apelamos a vós, estimados doadores. Neste momento, não vejo mesmo outra maneira de evitar ficar sem habitação em 1 janeiro 2026. Aguardo alguns orçamentos de fornecedores, mas uma estimativa por baixo, para o objectivo mínimo de tornar a casa habitável até ao fim de 2025, é: 15.000 euros.
Isto é contando ainda com uma boa dose de faça-você-mesmo, e só para um dos três pisos projetados, mas garantiria não ficarmos sem abrigo em 1 janeiro 2026. Com a vossa ajuda, conseguiremos.

Three days on site with my son working on this project. Analysing and removing debris. We removed only pieces that were within reach and loose. That was like 1% of the whole at best. Took us 10 hours, so the whole would take 1000 hours = 250 days! Luckily I found professionals that claim to do it in few days. I hired them—at the cost of almost all my fund! Next actions conditioned: either DIY—slowly, don't know if in time (2026); or else again hiring out some services—with the continuing generosity already found here. Três dias em Cafede, eu e filho, trabalhando na reconstrução da casa (solução de habitação em 2026). Analisando e retirando os destroços do antigo interior em madeira. Retirámos somente os soltos e alcançáveis em segurança. A olhómetro, 1% do todo; em 10 horas: então o todo seria 1000 horas = 250 dias! Felizmente, encontrei profissionais que dizem fazer isto em poucos dias. Veremos. Contratei-os — à custa de quase todo o meu fundo! Próximas ações condicionadas: ou as faço eu — demoradamente, sei lá se a tempo (antes de 2026); ou novamente por via de (alguns) serviços contratados — com a continuação da vossa ajuda benemérita.
