I Need Help. I have been running several music related archival websites for more than 13 years and my computer is dying. Since 2006 I have run sites for The Spoons (now archived at www.darrincappe.com/spoons), Rheostatics (www.rheostatics.ca), Rheostatics Archive (www.rheostaticslive.com), Wheat (www.thiswheat.com), The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir (www.bourbontabernaclechoir.com), Thomas Trio And The Red Albino (www.thomastrioandtheredalbino.com) and Tempus Fugit (www.fugitland.ca). I have done all of this without any funds provided or income earned - thus all the equipment required, domain names paid for, server space, and personal time spent has been on my own dime. I've been fine with that and thus have never asked for any help but at this point my computer which I have used for the past 11 years is dying and I really need some help to get a new one that will allow me to continue to do this moving forward.
Archiving material for these types of sites requires a huge amount of time and space. I have spent thousands and thousands of personal hours transferring VHS tapes, DAT tapes, Cassette Tapes, and other Video/Audio files and I have spent thousands of dollars on Software programs (audio, video etc) and Hardware (Hard Drives and RAM).
(just some of the hardware required over the years)
In order to process files and get them to the point where I can upload them for fans to use I have to first transfer the files in real time from their analog source, which takes up a great deal of hard drive space. I then need to process the audio and video quality of the files for best sound/video which is also very time consuming. From there I need to cut up the files into appropriate songs/sections and then convert them into multiple formats for audio. The files need to be zipped and uploaded to the server I use (I've been using Dreamhost since about 2000). The webpages need to then be created - i.e. writing all the content related to the files so there is a physical location for them to be downloaded from.
In addition to this I also manage the Facebook Pages for Rheostatics, Thomas Trio, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir and Tempus Fugit. I also maintain two Youtube pages with all the videos related to the bands mentioned under the usernames dcappe and darrincappe.
So I'm reaching out to you, fans of the music I've been happy to provide and support for many years, for your help. I need a new desktop computer which is not 11 years old and unable to support OS updates, in order to continue with the ongoing update of these sites, software to process and hardware to archive moving forward. If you are able to help I would most humbly appreciative. Like I said I don't ask for anything for the work that I do but I'm at a point where I'm not sure I can continue with what I have at this point and am looking for some support to do so.
