Rescue a Colonial American Home; circa: 1659

One of the oldest homes in Norwich, Connecticut, this property was slated for the wrecking ball! It dates back to 1659 during British Colonial America times. Together we've saved it. Now let's preserve it. It will be a great research library, education center and museum for public use.
Located in the Bean Hill Historic District of Norwich, Connecticut. This house was a contributing factor when the neighborhood was designated a National Historic District. It's listed individually on the CT Register of Historic Properties.
This original land plot, first owned by the John Pease family, dates back to the Norwich’s founding in 1659 (see map below). The house dates at least to the early 1660's. Hugh Calkins II (Caulkins) then owned the land and home. Hugh’s second wife was Lois Standish, granddaughter of Captain Myles Standish of the Mayflower. Hugh II and then his son Hugh Calkins and wife Phebe Abell, were quite active in the Separatist religious movement of the day with meetings held at his house. This home pre-dates the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. At least 6 generations of Calkins have lived here.
This home stands on the original stone foundation with hand-hewed beams & pegs, fireplace, and stone cellar with a dirt floor—a rare find.
The Calkins Family Association (CFA) -- a 501 (c)(3) non-profit public charity, alongside the Norwich Historical Society and Preservation Connecticut, are working together to bring the place back to its original style and make it a public education center staffed by volunteers.
All donations will be used for the property and its restoration. We can write you a tax receipt. The roof is now professionally tarped to prevent any further rain invasion. The landscapers mowed, hauled brush, removed a leaning tree. Things are moving!
We have raised the goal for this campaign. We are applying for a grant for $100K for roof replacement and structural repair. The grant requires matching funds. We have a loan that needs to be paid back. All donations go to this project.
