It’s no secret that budget cuts and the emphasis on standardized testing has decimated the arts programs in most public schools. What might surprise you is the level of the damage.
The number of public elementary schools offering theatre and dance dropped from 20% in 2000 to just 3% in 2010. If you graduated from high school more than ten years ago, chances are the arts programs you enjoyed – the class plays, the glee club, the band, the visual arts are mere shadows of themselves, if they still exist at all.
Red House Imaginarium exists to fill this void. Founded by longtime educators and professional artists, G. Michael Dominguez and Emily Dodson, RHI offers high quality, affordable classes in theatre, music, and the visual arts. Since September of 2016, RHI has welcomed nearly 100 students of all ages and levels through its (borrowed) doors, and we’re just getting started. But we need your help.
From Day One we have been committed to offering classes to all interested students, regardless of their ability to pay. We’re happy to do it. It’s why we’re here. But we don’t actually have a scholarship fund. When students are unable to pay for our classes we simply eat the cost - a tough swallow for a new program like ours.
We’ve nearly completed all the steps necessary to become a 501c-3 non-profit – we have a great board lined up, we’ve reserved the considerable money required to file, and as soon as we get approved we can begin applying for grants and offering tax deductions for donations. BUT… it can take up to a year to get approved. In the meantime, we really want to continue to offer reduced price or free classes to any kid who needs them. But we can’t do that if we can’t keep the lights on.
This is where you come in.
We are raising money to create a dedicated scholarship program for students who need our classes. Students whose schools no longer offer the arts programs you remember. Students who have no other opportunity in Nashville to take acting classes, or pop choir, or play in a band, or work on a portfolio. Students with an interest that may be kindled through passion and attention into the art we all need.
