Recovery Response - Sri Lanka Ditwah Cyclone

Donation protected
The Ditwah Cyclone in November 2025 caused severe damage to schools across the Eachchilampattu, Kuchchaveli, Hali-Ela, Badulla and Ella education divisions, disrupting learning and compromising the safety and wellbeing of hundreds of students. More than 50 schools lost essential
learning materials, classroom resources, and sanitation facilities, while floodwaters further restricted access to safe drinking water.

These education divisions are home to highly vulnerable communities, largely dependent on daily-wage labour, making recovery slower and more challenging. Prolonged disruptions increase the risks of learning loss, reduced attendance, and long-term educational setbacks.

The Government of Sri Lanka initiated a large-scale response immediately. Nevertheless, NGOs and CSOs have an important role in providing backstopping support—working hand in hand with government authorities to deliver technical expertise, mobilise resources, and accelerate the recovery of affected schools. In this context, KITES Foundation proposes to support 42 affected schools in Trincomalee and Badulla Districts, in close coordination with the Provincial Education Authorities of the Eastern and Uva Provinces and the Muthur and Badulla Zonal Education Offices.

KITES Foundation’s early-recovery intervention focuses on restoring learning continuity, ensuring child safety, and re-establishing essential services. The project will provide essential education supplies, promote health and hygiene awareness, and strengthen water-safety
measures. These actions will help students return to school and continue their studies in a safe, supportive, and resilient environment when schools re-open for the first term in January 2026.

Background of Fundraiser:

I have previously worked as a Programme Coordinator in Sri Lanka with the founding members of KITES Foundation. KITES Foundation is a non-governmental organisation formed by a team of like-minded development sector professionals. It was founded in mid-2024 in Trincomalee, Eastern Province, Sri Lanka.

The funds will be deposited to KITES Foundation on a weekly basis. If you prefer, you are welcome to deposit directly to their account, details provided on their website.
