Yesterday was supposed to be one of the happiest days of our lives as my niece, Derion Melancon, proudly walked across the stage to receive her diploma. But while our family was gathered celebrating her graduation, tragedy struck at home.

A devastating house fire destroyed everything. The only person inside at the time was Derion’s elderly disabled grandmother. By the grace of God and the quick actions of caring neighbors, she was safely rushed out of the house in time.

My 5-year-old autistic nephew has lost all of his belongings, comfort items, clothes, and the place he called home. In the middle of receiving her diploma, Derion was given the heartbreaking news that everything was gone.
