Rebecca's Acute Leukaemia Battle

My dear friend, Terry Petrie's daughter, Rebecca, was diagnosed with acute leukaemia on February 14, immediately hospitalized and put on a strict regime of chemotherapy. At age 34 this diagnosis is disheartening as generally only young children survive this form of cancer. Rebecca was in hospital in Kitchener undergoing treatment from February till the end of March, at which time was she was sent home to Fergus to await a stem cell transplant in mid-May in Hamilton. This will require one month in the Jurvanski Cancer Centre and three months living no more than 30 minutes from there in case of Rebecca's body rejecting these stem cells.
In-mid May Terry is taking compassionate leave offered by the government so she can be by her daughter's bedside during the week. Rebecca's Dad, Steve, will drive down and stay with her on the weekends.
The family suffered another blow this week when they learned there are no hospital-arranged long-term living accommodations available near the Jurvanski Cancer Centre. They are on their own to find affordable lodging. The Petries have already been financially overwhelmed by treks daily from Fergus to Kitchener and loss of pay.
Well there's my story. The family is too proud to ask for help, but I saw the toll take its inevitable effect on Terry, arriving at work at 5:30 a.m., only to drive 40 km to Kitchener at 1:00 p.m., and return home by 9:00 p.m. Now that Rebecca is home, the stress of the upcoming months, coupled with rushing Rebecca to Emergency whenever her bloods cell count falls, weighs heavily on the family. Steve watches his little girl suffering and he can doing nothing to help her - it is ripping him apart. Rebecca's brother, Corey, will be donating his stem cells. And Rebecca, well she is doing the best job she can in this fight to survive with her usual grace, but it would certainly help her greatly if she did not have to worry about the financial costs her family is incurring.
