In the picturesque rural community of Alcoutim, Portugal, as in many other rural areas, we’re facing a growing challenge: youth are leaving for better opportunities in cities, and elders are left isolated. Local traditions, stories, and skills are at risk of disappearing, and with them, the roots that hold these communities together.
Imagine a grandmother weaving baskets, passing down the techniques and stories she learned from her ancestors. Or a grandfather teaching a teenager to play a folk tune or paint a traditional tile, just as others once taught him. Picture a community leader sharing deep knowledge of the land and sustainable farming practices. Now, picture a world where these stories go untold, these skills are lost, and a rich cultural heritage quietly fades away.
That’s why we created Raízes Vivas (Living Roots)—a community-driven initiative that connects youth and elders through skill-sharing programs, traditional crafts workshops, community events, and the digital preservation of heritage. Our mission is to transform rural communities into thriving hubs of culture, connection, and opportunity.
With your support, we can:
- Host hands-on workshops where elders and youth share skills, crafts, stories, and traditions.
- Empower youth to stay rooted by transforming heritage skills and trades into entrepreneurial opportunities while promoting sustainable resource use.
- Combat elder loneliness by valuing, recognizing, and celebrating their ancestral wisdom and knowledge.
- Preserve unique heritage through digital storytelling and documentation, ensuring cultural and environmental knowledge is passed down to future generations.

- Creating an audio library installation and developing digital resources to document and share cultural heritage.
- Organizing workshops and community events, including the first local Storytelling event in May 2025.
- Providing materials for arts, crafts, and skill-sharing activities.
- Expanding our initiative to neighboring villages, ensuring the legacy lives on.
