I am a member of The Bombay Beach Community. Herb and Rosa are my neighbors. Bombay is a remote desert area of less than 300 people.. A large percent of our town are seniors who live on fixed incomes. Limited finances, make major repairs to their homes almost impossible and over time even regular maintenance is challenging. When there is a disastrous weather event like Hurricane Hillary, homes that were the least fortified became even less secure. These seniors were impacted the most and do not have the extra resources to get their homes repaired so that they will provide shelter against future weather events or the triple digit heat that is an incubator for wet ceilings to grow mold. Every time it rains, Herb and Rosa call on the bucket brigade. Rosa is even fighting off a large leak that is right over her bed. Both Herb and Rosa applied for Government disaster relief in 2024. Both were approved and after changes in the administration and a series of grant cancellations and furloughed employees, who were supposed to be handling these cases, there are no funds or roofs in sight. Two years is unacceptable and the damage is getting worse over time.. The community is willing to help with labor, but we need support for materials for both of these neighbors whose needs are compounded by some physical disabilities.
