Within the globally renowned Maasai Mara ecosystem in Kenya, wildlife such as elephants live alongside people every day.

However, this coexistence is not always harmonious, and harmful encounters between wildlife and humans are becoming more frequent as wilderness areas are increasingly fragmented.

The Crisis:

Space is Running Out

When vital habitats shrink and traditional migratory routes are blocked, elephants and indigenous Maasai communities are forced into close, dangerous competition for water, food, and space. This rapidly growing Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) frequently leads to property destruction, injuries, and tragic loss of life for both people and wildlife.

How You Can Help (What is Needed)

Your donation goes directly to the frontline. We urgently need funding to sustain our HWC prevention efforts:

Patrol Logistics:

Fuel and maintenance for ranger vehicles and motorbikes to enable rapid response.

Field Gear: Specialized ranger equipment and conflict-deterrent tools to protect lives in high-stakes scenarios.

Ground Operations:

Funding for local informants to report incidents fast, and community fence technicians to safely free trapped wildlife.

Our Solution:

Receive, Respond, Resolve

When elephants approach homesteads or wildlife gets trapped in fences, our rangers deploy a highly effective method of "gentle persuasion" to de-escalate high-risk zones. We ensure our ground teams are always equipped to:

Receive: Log community emergency reports instantly around the clock.

Respond: Deploy rapid-assistance teams to field incidents immediately.

Resolve: Secure the safest, most peaceful outcome for everyone involved.

Who We Are

For nearly 20 years, Elephant Aware has partnered with Maasai communities to secure a future for wildlife and their habitats through four key strategies:

Conflict Avoidance: Escorting school children in high-risk areas, moving wildlife away from homesteads, and conducting daily monitoring.

Anti-Poaching: Patrolling daily to remove illegal wire snares and deter wildlife crimes.

Community Outreach: Creating local jobs, sponsoring school fees, and providing land-lease benefits and more.

Research & Awareness: Elephant Aware works closely with research partners and maintains consistent efforts to create awareness both locally and internationally about elephants as well as conservation in general.

Background

Kenya’s shift from communal to individual land ownership has caused an astronomical rise in private fencing across the Mara ecosystem. This fragments the landscape into isolated "islands," trapping people and wildlife in a growing crisis of Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC).

We strongly believe that a more peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife IS possible, but it requires the right tools to be in place.

The Mara-Serengti ecosystem is one of the most vital remaining refuges for wildlife and biodiversity on Earth.

With your support, you can be a part of the solution. You can actively help support a peaceful coexistence for people and wildlife in the Mara ecosystem.
