Help Frutos de Mães Daycare
Donazione protetta
Hi to my family and friends at home! I miss you all so much, but my time in Brazil has been one of the best experiences of my life. Over the past 7 months, I’ve been working in a daycare called Frutos de Mães. The work I’ve been doing here has been the most meaningful component of my gap year. When I showed up, they were understaffed and there was no structure in the classrooms. Since then, my long-term goal has been to provide some organization both in the classroom and in the daycare as a whole. There’s nothing better for me than showing up in the morning and spending my day with my group of amazing 4 and 5 year olds. Despite their challenges at home, they are some of the happiest kids I know. Most of the kids who I work with come from homes with abusive parents, parents with drug related problems, or struggling single parents. Giving attention and care to the kids as well as preparing them for primary school have been very fulfilling for me.
When the daycare was started 30 years ago, it was transformed from a drug ring body depository into a safe space where kids could get away from that very type of influence. Since then, the daycare has been passed from generation to generation, from mother to daughter. Receiving almost no help from the government, the family has dedicated its life to keeping the daycare alive. The facility is very understaffed, and the staff that they do have is underqualified. On top of that, they struggle to find the resources to supply 3 nutritious meals a day, and sufficient school supplies for the classrooms. Finding ways to pay the monthly water and electric bills is another continual obstacle for them.
I can’t believe how long it’s been since I’ve been home and since I’ve seen you all. But there’s so much more work to be done here. With your help, we have the chance to make a difference in so many people’s lives, and beyond that, to support a community that has supported and included me.
From paying the bills, to getting supplies, to finding new teachers, there are so many ways that we can help provide for Frutos.
I can’t wait to see what we will accomplish. I am so grateful for your help!
Com muito amor,
With much love,
Kobi
