Hallo liebe Community,
ich möchte hier gerne die Geschichte meiner Freundin Carolin mit euch teilen. Carolin ist 28 Jahre alt und hat ihr Bachelorstudium in Germanistik und Philosophie an der Universität in Potsdam abgeschlossen und macht derzeit ihren Master an Freien Universität in Berlin. Zu ihren Leidenschaften zählen lesen, politische Aktivitäten und soziales Engagement. Sie macht sich stets für andere stark und packt mit an, wenn Hilfe gebraucht wird. Durch ihr sonniges Gemüt und ihre wundervolle, warme Ausstrahlung schafft sie es einem auch in schlechten Zeiten den Tag zu versüßen. Am Ende ihres Masterstudiums angekommen, war sie dabei ihre Masterarbeit zu schreiben. Leider kam es nicht dazu.
Im August 2017 ging Caro mit Kopfschmerzen ins Krankenhaus und bekam die Diagnose Glioblastom Stadium V, ein bösartiger Hirntumor der nicht vollständig entfernt werden kann. Trotz der schlechten Prognosen bei solchen Fällen, entschied Caro sich dafür, dem Tumor den Kampf anzusagen. Nach erfolgreicher Teilentfernung und anschließender Chemo- und Strahlentherapie, ging es ihr vorübergehend wieder besser. Wir hatten einen tollen Sommer 2018 zusammen und haben jede Sekunde davon ausgekostet. Sie war sogar überzeugt davon, ihren Master bald abschließen zu können, ihr Traum. Doch leider kam nach der Euphorie auch wieder die Ernüchterung. Im Dezember letzten Jahres fing Caro plötzlich an doppelt zu sehen. Ein klares Zeichen, dass was im Gehirn nicht ganz zu stimmen scheint. Im MRT wurde dann festgestellt, dass der Tumor erneut gewachsen ist.
Der zweite operative Eingriff erfolgte am nächsten Tag. Zunächst schien alles gut verlaufen zu sein. Doch dann bildete sich ein Ödem, also eine Wasseranlagerung im Gehirn, die zur Folge hat, dass der Druck im Gehirn gefährlich ansteigt. Sie lag daraufhin mehrere Wochen im Koma. Zur Senkung des Hirndrucks wurde eine Kraniektomie durchgeführt. Ein Teil ihrer Schädeldecke musste entfernt werden, sodass sich der Druck im Hirn stabilisieren konnte. Mitte Januar diesen Jahres öffnete Caro dann endlich wieder ihre Augen. Ihr Zustand ist seitdem unverändert. Sie ist am ganzen Körper gelähmt und kann ihr Bett nicht verlassen. Sie ist jedoch bei Bewusstsein und kann durch Kopfnicken und Kopfschütteln kommunizieren. Da für Caro im Krankenhaus leider nichts mehr gemacht werden konnte, wurde sie zunächst in die Frühreha verlegt. Anschließend sollte sie in ein Hospiz kommen, aber das wollte Caro nicht. Sie würde gerne nach Hause. Das ist leider nicht möglich, da sie schwer pflegebedürftig (Pflegestufe V) ist und eine Rundumbetreuung braucht.
Wir konnten jedoch einen Kompromiss finden und sie stattdessen in eine Pflege WG verlegen lassen. Diese befindet sich in einem Ärztehaus. Sie hat dort ihr eigenes Zimmer mit all ihren Sachen von zu Hause. Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und kümmert sich liebevoll um Caro. Wir können sie jederzeit besuchen und sogar übernachten ist erlaubt. Das Ganze hat natürlich seinen Preis:
Der Pflegehöchstsatz reicht leider nicht, obwohl Caros Mama bereits Leistungen (wie das Putzen des Zimmers) übernommen hat. Zusätzlich kommt die Miete für das WG-Zimmer. Caros Mama kann nicht für alles alleine aufkommen, daher bitten wir euch um Hilfe. Wir möchten sie gemeinsam mit euch unterstützen, um für Caro weiterhin ein schönes Umfeld zu ermöglichen, in dem sie sich wohl fühlt & wo gut um sie gekümmert wird.

I would like to use this platform to share the story of my dear friend Carolin. Caro is 28 years old and finished her Bachelor’s Degree in German studies and Philosophy at the University of Potsdam and is now in her Masters at the Free University in Berlin. Caro is a passionate reader, has a favor for politics and is highly socially engaged. She is always there when help is needed and makes herself strong for others. She is a happy, always smiling character that brightens up your day. A couple of months ago Caro was busy finding a topic for her Master thesis in order to finish her Master studies. However, that never happened.
In August 2017 Caro got headache and was brought to the hospital in which she was told that she has a Glioblastoma stage V (an aggressive cancer that cannot be entirely removed). Even though the prognosis in such cases are not promising, she decided to fight the tumor. After a surgical partial resection followed by chemo- and radiotherapy, Caro felt revitalized for some time. We had a beautiful summer in 2018 and we enjoyed it to the full. She was even convinced she could finish her Master studies soon. After a euphoric, time the disillusionment came rapidly. In December last year, Caro started seeing double, which is a clear sign that something might be wrong in the brain. In the MRI, the doctors saw that the tumor was growing again.
The second surgery followed immediately. First, it seemed like everything went well. Then an edema (water retention) occurred in her brain causing the brain pressure rising critically. Thereupon Caro was in coma for several weeks. In order to decrease the pressure in her brain a craniectomy (partially removal of the cranial bone) was conducted.
Mid-January this year Caro finally opened her eyes again. Her situation did not change until now. She is entirely paralyzed and cannot leave her bed. She is still conscious and can communicate by nodding. Since the doctors said that they cannot do anything in order to improve Caros situation, she was brought to an ‘Early Rehabilitation’. After several weeks there Caros situation did not improve and she was supposed to be brought to a hospice. But Caros only wish was just to go home and stay with her mother. Unfortunately, due to her situation she is in need of a medical all-round care which makes it impossible to stay with her mom. Caros mom found a good solution, which is a so-called 'Pflege-WG'. It is basically a shared apartment in a medical center. There, Caro has her own room with her furniture from home. The medical stuff that is taking care of her is lovely and caring. Her friends and family are allowed to visit her at any time and staying over night is allowed as well. Of course, all this has its price: care costs, care materials and room rent. The health insurance covers the care costs only. Since Caros mom cannot afford to the rent plus the costs for the care materials she needs our support. Together with you we can give Caro a nice place in which she can spend time with her family and friends and is surrounded by lovely people taking care of her.
