Volunteering in Zambia (Chipulukusu)

I aim to volunteer in Zambia this August and want to get involved as much as I possibly can to help the efforts made there, hence this page. The money will be used for a number of things, from a library that is currently being built to food (breakfast and lunch for those who are attending the classes) to aid their education through good nutrition, and from books to computers so the locals can learn to read and write and how to use a computer.

What we aim to do is help this process along by splitting up into teams to tackle areas such as illiteracy. With the aid of some teachers who will volunteer with us, we hope to make a difference by helping these people lift themselves out of poverty through education. I will be helping with the computer side of things, from the basics of how to turn a computer on and off to using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

All the money raised goes to Zambia and the efforts made there. The organisation that I will be going with is called Inspire Zambia, an Irish-registered charity which has been going to Zambia since 2008. During each of the visits to Chipulukusu, the volunteers have been living in the same neighbourhoods as the locals and in almost the same conditions: no running water, plumbing, showers, or toilets; no electricity, no kitchen facilities, and no furniture. They have slept on the floor. The only differences are that we have mosquito nets to sleep under, good food to eat, and protection from the various diseases present in that part of the world.
