Negotiating his life in a wheelchair was not something Aimal Zafari planned on. The young Afghan interpreter had dreams of moving to America and becoming a Marine. He was inspired by the men and women he served with during the War in Afghanistan, and, thanks to their friendship and petitions—and support from the U.S. government—he was able to make good on the first part of his wish, immigrating to America in 2017.
Prior to his journey, however, after nearly 10 years of service to U.S. forces, Aimal was shot and paralyzed while attempting to save a Marine during an ambush. Subsequent health complications left him fighting for his life.
Aimal’s first five weeks in America were spent in the hospital, where he came to terms with letting go of his hope for a career as a Marine. Upon discharge, with no nearby family, no financial resources, and a slew of ongoing medical complications, he embarked on building a life in New York’s Capital Region. The challenges he has faced—and the wit, strength, and resourcefulness with which he has met them—have been nothing short of remarkable.

Three years ago, the Times Union chronicled his need for a new wheelchair, and, while the response was overwhelmingly generous, with offers to help and donated equipment, he is still, today, in need of a custom wheelchair fit to his specific measurements and needs.
Aimal recently started a full-time job that enables him to continue using his language skills to help others. Now, we would like to help him by crowdfunding for a new manual wheelchair to replace the damaged, second-hand model he has been using.
The new chair will be durable, lightweight, fit to his exact measurements, and easily disassembled to fit in the passenger seat of a car. Its approximate cost is $3,500.
Aimal has moved into a new apartment that has been made handicap accessible but there are related expenses he faces along with standing and expected medical costs. To meet all of this, our campaign goal is $7,500. Our effort will be complete once we reach this amount.
Each contribution received will help a worthy new member of our community and honor his service and the service of others he was with, while under fire, not long ago.
