Marina's Fight Against Stage 4 Cancer

None of us saw it coming. Our friend Marina, the light of so many people's lives here in North Dakota, had been dealing with pain and exhaustion for a few months—but when we got the text, it didn't seem real: "Cancer, stage 4."

Things move quickly in cancer land. Since that text a few weeks ago, Marina has been through a battery of tests, appointments, scans, and labs, culminating in a surgery removing her thyroid, parathyroid, and glands.

Through it all, she's stayed in good spirits! Almost every day, we get a message from her sharing a Bible verse or an encouraging interaction she had. We love our girl and are so inspired by the dignified, faith-filled example she's setting.

Marina is a single mom of three kids, all teenage and older. ‍‍She's the breadwinner in her family, and her treatments significantly cut into her ability to provide for them.

This is especially true because of North Dakota's sparse medical care. Since Marina lives in the Bakken (for those who don't live here, it's basically in rural Canada!), she has to travel hundreds of miles to get to appointments. The expenses are adding up.

I can't tell you the impact Marina has made on my life personally. ❤️ After meeting her at an oil and gas conference last year, I fell into an inseparable group of friends in the Bakken that I hope will be with me the rest of my life. Marina has a huge heart, an adorable laugh, and an unforgettable charisma—not to mention, she's super hot, and every guy she meets tries to recruit one of us to be his wingman. But she's got a good head on her shoulders, and her independent streak is fierce…so good luck, boys!
