
MAKING A CHANGE WITH NIGERIA RUGBY LEAGUE
Recently Nigerian Rugby League Association(NRLA) hosted and won the second Middle East and African World Championship.
The Championship happened in October 2019, the first of its kind in Nigeria which featured four countries including Ghana, Cameroun, Morocco and the host, Nigeria. Nigeria won the 2019 MEA Championship, defeating Morocco 38-16 at the TBS Cricket Oval, home of Lagos Cricket Club.

As a result of this win, the foundation has been laid for NRLA to build upon the success and set its sights towards an ambitious plan of qualifying and hoisting Nigeria’s flag at the 2025 World Cup.
To get to the World Cup there will be a series of scouting, sensitization, team-building, conferences, exhibitions, and matches that will be played. Included in these plans, NRLA is using its platform to train, encourage and empower youths through it the introduction of rugby across grass root and awareness. A summary of the intended road map is itemized below:
2020
- Obtain affiliation membership status with international rugby league federation
- Establish university leagues
- Expand rugby league coverage throughout Nigeria
- Green Hawks tours( Ghana and Cameroon)
- Inaugural state of origin match between the North and SouthWest
- Take part in the MEA Championship hosted by South Africa
2021
- Expand the school’s league to cover as many territories in the federation
- Apply to participate in emerging Nations world cup; Women, Men, and combined armed forces
2022
- Planning to be apart of Common Wealth Game **to be confirmed**
- Targeting up to 30 teams for National league 3 divisions
- Nigeria school boys and girls National team under-16 men and women
- Nigeria under 18 National team men and women
2023
- World Cup preparation
2024
- World Cup preparation
- Obtain full member status with Rugby federation
To the NRLA, sports is about shared joys, passion, and commitment. It is a way to foster unity, help build communities and most importantly, change lives through the game by the principle of discipline and perseverance to our youth. Alongside the Championships, the NRLA aims to host a number of annual events including National Women and Youth tournaments, as well as coaching clinics and other courses relevant to the sport.
