Luna's Recovery Campaign

Donation protected
Luna wandered into our lives in 2015, and has been a cherished member of our family ever since. For the last 9 years, we have been blessed with raising her from an overgrown, excitable puppy to a gentle, loveable giant who loves long car rides, walk time, and trying to convince us that she’s still a lap dog. We have loved every moment of our time spent with our Luna Bean, and have done our best to raise a happy, healthy pup.

Unfortunately, 2024 has thrown a number of health setbacks at Luna.

On 1 April 2024, we took Luna to the vet to treat what we had assumed was a strong bacterial infection. The veterinarian did not have an exact diagnosis for Luna, but placed her on antibiotics to try to combat her symptoms. However, by the next day, Luna’s symptoms began to worsen.

Her runny nose and filmy eyes had progressed to noticeable fatigue, and a limp that worsened as the days went on, affecting her ability to stand. By 6 April, Luna had completely lost the ability to stand on her own, and was showing signs of intense pain when we tried to assist her. A trip to the emergency vet that night resulted in several tests with their on-site neurologist, including extensive blood work, X-rays, PCR tests, and an MRI for both her head and spinal cord. All in all, Luna was kept at the vet for over 24 hours while we awaited the answers.

On 9 April, we were finally informed that Luna’s sudden deterioration was the result of an autoimmune response, which was attacking her spinal cord and seventh cranial nerve, resulting in leg and partial facial paralysis. As a result, she was placed on anti-inflammatory steroids and immunosuppressants, which, though helpful in combating the primary health concern, have brought their own side effects, including a significant loss in muscle mass for Luna. She will be on steroids for several months, and the immunosuppressants for at least a year.

The journey ahead for Luna will not be an easy one, but we and her doctors are optimistic that she will be able to regain her mobility, and once again lead a happy life.

Unfortunately, the cost of recovery is an expensive one. As of 1 May 2024, the total cost of Luna’s visits and treatments thus far has surpassed $15,000, with further costs likely. While we would do anything for our Luna Bean, and she is worth all of that and more, tackling these costs head-on has been daunting, particularly in the face of other financial necessities.

We are asking for any support that you may be able to spare, in order to help cover the costs of Luna’s treatments, and allow for her continued recovery. We are hoping to raise $15,000, with a stretch goal of $20,000, to cover future costs.

Any contribution, however small, is deeply appreciated, and can come in the form of donations, sharing this campaign, as well as thoughts and prayers. We hope to help Luna in her recovery in any way that we can, and thank you all for your time and support.
