Bria and Josh Galvin were married in June 2018 and soon after were overjoyed to discover that they were expecting a baby boy! On December 30, 2018 Bria's water ruptured prematurely at 24 weeks 3 days. After a trip to the emergency room, she started having light contractions and was given steroid shots and magnesium sulfate to help facilitate lung development and prevent brain bleeding. The magnesium sulfate helped stop labor, and Bria was transferred via ambulance to Lutheran General where the NICU is equipped to care for micropremies. The hope was for Bria to remain in the hospital on bedrest for the next two months, but ten days later on January 8th she started having contractions again. She was placed back on magnesium sulfate which was able to slow the contractions down, but the next day there was concern that an infection was brewing. The decision was made to remove Bria from the magnesium sulfate and allow her body to go into labor, and by 8:16pm baby Terrance was born! He was born at 25 weeks 6 days, weighed 1lb 13oz and was 13" long, which is a good size for a baby that age.
Bria was able to see him for 30 seconds and he was breathing on his own and had some faint cries, no doubt the result of everyone's prayers! He was rushed to an incubator bed and they worked on him for about 10 minutes before transferring him to the NICU, closely followed by Josh and his mom. Bria was able to see him later that night and was able to hold him for the first time the next day.
On top of the extensive medical costs accrued by a prolonged NICU stay, Bria has only been able to work part time since having Terrance. They are currently driving over an hour to and from the hospital every day to be with Terrance, which has placed a significant financial burden on them as the cost of gas and on-the-go food is adding up. This fundraiser has been started to offset the cost of medical bills and incidentals that arise from having a child in the NICU for an extended period of time.
