Are you looking for a place to donate that will have a tangible impact and effect immediate change?
Donate to Love and Justice in the Streets, a local Oakland homelessness aid and advocacy group. Love and Justice in the Streets also organizes with other homeless advocacy and action groups, such as the Homeless Advocacy Working Group, The Village/Feed the People, East Oakland Collective, and others. They will ensure that these supplies get to communities in immediate need, especially those at risk of eviction.
“The city is giving them absolutely no information about where they are allowed to go, they are just saying you cannot be here,” Talya Husbands-Hankin--organizer for the group--said. “This is a pattern. They are criminalizing homeless people, forcing them to move and not giving them anywhere safe to go... we have people now in a life-and-death situation that is a direct result of the city’s policies,” Husbands-Hankin said to The East Bay Times in June of this year.
“If we’re out here watching, the city is more likely to treat them better,” Husbands-Hankin says, adding later that the encampment evictions are “unbelievably painful. We are violating people’s human rights and their dignity." Excerpt of an Oakland North article from December 2017.
