Life-Saving Open Heart Surgery for Baby Topper

Baby Topper is already a heart warrior, our daughter fights with every heartbeat.

At 29 weeks pregnant, our daughter was diagnosed with Shone's Complex, an incredibly rare congenital heart disease affecting the structure of her heart that consists of multiple issues on the left side. This was found during a high-risk pregnancy ultrasound.

At 35 weeks pregnant, it was confirmed she would need life-saving open-heart surgery at only 2 days old. Just after birth she will be given a critical medication to allow blood to continue flowing through her heart to keep her alive long enough for the surgery. The first open heart surgery will be to fix severe coarctation of her aortic arch. From there, it's just a waiting game to see how her heart responds and what interventions/ surgeries are needed next.

The children's hospital where birth and surgery are taking place is unfortunately out-of-network for our insurance. We know for sure our time in the NICU will be a minimum of 2 weeks, but there are so many unknowns beyond the initial surgery.
