Hypertension is said to be a silent killer. For Judah Chukwuemeka Njoku Nwahiri, this phrase played out to be so true. On the 9th of January 2021, he went to a health facility to possibly run some test to find out why he was not getting better despite taking some natural remedies for what he considered to be a stress-induced weakness.
It was discovered that his blood pressure was over the readable limits. Immediately placed in the emergency ward, he was given an injection of which the side effects almost made him pass on. By the mercies of God, he was revived. Further tests showed he had high levels of Urea and Creatinine.
This led to a journey to the Lagos State Teaching Hospital in Nigeria where he started dialysis immediately. Diagnosed with Acute Chronic Kidney Disease, he was on admission for twenty-five days. Hypertension albeit unknown to him had damaged his kidneys.
Battling with high blood pressure, he has had over thirty-one dialysis sessions but he is yet to get back to his lively self and get back to work as a Counselor encouraging and teaching people that there is a positive side to life.
Doctors have advised that the best option is a kidney transplant. He has moved to Zenith Kidney Center, a renowned hospital in Nigeria that performs kidney transplants. The cost of dialysis and medications since the 9th of Jan has been mind-boggling. Due to the state of health care in Nigeria, diseases like CKD are very expensive to manage.
As of date, over three million Naira (approximately USD6,250) has been spent on managing his condition and he is still spending on dialysis which runs twice a week and medications. He needs Ten Million Naira (approximately USD20,000) for a kidney transplant. His sister is willing to be a donor but he needs help to raise the funds for a transplant.
