Keis Family Miracle - 12 weeks early

Donazione protetta
Nick, Sam & Guinevere Keis have a long road ahead of them. Wednesday, July 22nd forever changed their life. What started as a panicked phone call from Sam (28 weeks pregnant) to Nick around 4:15 PM with paralyzing stomach pain, a pain she could barely speak through, he rushed home to her. Upon arriving home he noticed her stomach didn't look right, he immediately swooped her up and put her into his truck. While driving, he called the ambulance to meet them along the way, at which point they rushed Sam to Mercy Hospital. Once in the ambulance, they announced a code blue with a possible ruptured uterus and baby with a low heartbeat. Sam arrived at the hospital and within 10 minutes they confirmed that the baby was completely out of the uterus and drowning inside of Sam's abdomen.

Around this same time, Nick was arriving at the hospital and could not locate his family. He was eventually directed to the Mother Baby Center where a code blue was continued. Medical professionals were running back and forth with equipment. Nick asked the hospital desk what was happening and could not get an answer. He sternly told the person at the desk that he needed to know what was happening with his wife at which point a doctor told him that Sam was in surgery being worked on but could not give me an answer at this time to how she and the baby were doing. In Nick's distress, they brought him back to the triage room where they started Sam's care. Nick noticed the blood on the floor, he lost his mind at this point and demanded answers about his wife and baby. The nurse made a call to the operating room and after hanging up she asked if I would like a chaplain to join us. Nick immediately thought the worst at this point, that he had just lost his family. Nick lost himself at this surreal moment. After 10 minutes more of waiting for an answer, the doctor came in to tell him that during the emergency cesarean section Sam lost a lot of blood and she is being patched up, but she is okay.

From Nick, "I thanked God so hard that I felt I was hugging him personally. This was only a small victory since I still did not know how my baby was doing. After more time, what seemed like a lifetime of waiting, the doctor came in to tell me that I could see our baby"

When Sam woke up she immediately asked, "do I still have a baby in me?" She was notified that the baby was out and being worked on. Nick went down to see the baby for the first time and noticed all the wires and tubes keeping their baby alive, it was overwhelming. One of the 20 people in the room asked if Nick would like to touch his daughter, learning their child's gender for the first time.  The emotion was overwhelming.  Enter Guinevere Clara Keis at just 2lbs 6 oz. 15 3/4" long, 12 weeks early.

From Nick, “I washed my hands as vigorously as I could to ensure that I wouldn't damage this precious angel. As I reached down, she grabbed my fingertip with her whole hand and squeezed so hard that her tiny fingertips turned white. After about 10 minutes with her, they packed her into a transport unit to take her to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. I went up to Sam's room to see her for the first time since the surgery and she looked amazing. The transport team brought our daughter to see Sam for the first time and she was able to hold her hand for 5 minutes before being transported. The morning after the surgery, July 23rd, I went to Children's Hospital to see our daughter. When I walked into the room, she was hooked up to a machine to monitor every vital in her body. Two nurses were working on her, taking blood, and checking vitals. The care for her is 24 hours a day with constant check-ups. The nurses told me that they are doing some extra monitoring for a few issues. She has a breathing tube to regulate her breathing. A virtual, real-time EKG to monitor a brain bleed, and multiple other wires for feeding and monitoring. I haven't been allowed to hold her but can give her hand little hugs, and that seems to comfort her. Her breathing as of today is not as good as yesterday, she was moved to a different ventilator on July 24th. She has been having issues with her lungs because they are so little. Currently, she is on a jet ventilator that gives her 400 little breaths per minute. She is on some additional medication to try to increase her ability to breathe on her own. Sam is expected to be released today, July 24, after another transfusion to combat the blood loss from the emergency cesarean. I spoke to the doctor today (July 24) and she said that my daughter would have likely died in Sam's abdominal cavity if she was in there for a minute longer. Her heartbeat was very faint at that time and it was lucky we got her out when we did."

Guinevere is fighting for her life.  As of now, they plan on keeping Guinevere at Children's Hospital until her original due date of October 11.

Funds raised will go directly to Nick & Sam Keis for expenses incurred during this incredibly uncertain time.  Between paid time off & short term disability Sam should be able to collect monies into October.  There is no paid time off available to Nick.   The Keis family does have medical insurance, but are currently navigating the process.  They’re hoping for best case scenario that Sam's deductible and Gwen's won't equal more than $8,800.00 together. They aren't sure about any unknowns like ambulance rides for Sam and Gwen, donor milk, if needed, hotel stays, parking, fuel…much is unknown at this time.
