When our MKE Good Food Bus was totaled in a hit and run incident Saturday night, we lost not just our wheels and ability to pick up and deliver fresh local produce around town. We lost the fruits of a beautiful custom paint job and our growing recognition around town, and the insurance (minus deductible of course) on a 14 year old vehicle doesn't come close to recovering these things. We have always wanted a real bus, and settled for the minivan this summer so we could use our grant funds towards donating and discounting more produce, while still supporting small farmers, than originally planned. It's a time of extra stress on a system already struggling with deep food insecurity and we were grateful to be able to make that pivot. Now, we're picking that original vision back up. With the help of the community we love and loves us back, we are going for a real used school bus. $10,000 will help us get one, fit it out for our purposes, support our staff in obtaining a CDL, and help us find a regular and safe parking spot. With this amount, we can keep working on our off season plans for streaming cook-along classes with local chefs and helping provide community meals. We can come back stronger next growing season and be here for our farmers and our community.
