Help Keep Smokey the Goat (As Seen on Stephen Colbert!) Safe, Legal & Loved in Detroit

Hi everyone, and thank you for being here.

If you’ve met Smokey — or even just seen him go viral and land a feature on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert — you already know he’s a star with a personality bigger than his horns. Smokey, along with his two goat siblings, Perfect and Angel, has brought laughter, joy, and pure wholesome chaos to our community. They’ve become an unexpected spark of happiness in Detroit, reminding people that nature, humor, and healing can live right here in the city.

But now Smokey and his siblings need our community’s help.

Why We’re Raising Funds

In order for Smokey, Perfect, and Angel to legally stay at Golden Roots Farm in Detroit, we must secure:

• Special Land Use Permits

• City Fees for keeping goats within city limits

• Fines & administrative costs already issued

• Construction of proper safe housing & shelter for the goats

• Fencing & habitat upgrades so they can live comfortably and legally

City regulations require formal permits and upgrades to ensure their living space is compliant and properly structured. The goal is not just to keep them here — but to build a safe, sustainable, community-friendly environment where they can thrive.

What This Means for Detroit

Smokey isn’t just a goat — he’s become a symbol of joy. People stop by to meet him, kids light up when they see him, and adults who need a moment of peace find it in his adorable face (even if he sometimes thinks he runs the place).
