“Hello, my name is Javiel, and I’m the Mother of Kairo, my third son, who turned 2 on December 8th, 2023. Tragically, just 11 days after his birthday, I found him unresponsive one morning as I was getting him ready for daycare. Rushing him to the ER, I witnessed the distressing sight of him struggling to breathe and shaking uncontrollably. The doctors discovered he had suffered a brain bleed due to a rare condition called AVM, which we were unaware of. Kairo has undergone 6 surgeries, a blood transfusion, and has been on a ventilator for 45 days. He now has a Trache, G-tube, and a VP shunt in his brain.
Currently, Kairo remains in the PICU with plans for another week or two of hospitalization. Following that, he will undergo 2-3 months of inpatient rehabilitation to relearn basic functions like walking, talking, and eating. The extent of his neurological damage is still unknown. As I take time off work to be with him, the financial strain of his care weighs heavily on me.
