At the beginning of April, Jonathan Ting (JTing) was diagnosed with cancer in the nasopharynx. It's the same type of cancer that his father, paternal uncle and aunt had. His father ultimately passed away because of it at the age of 51. (Above is a photo of Jonathan and his dad) For Jonathan, the current staging is 1. So there is hope - he described it as "Finding it at an early stage gives me hope that my story would perhaps be different than my Dad's". Despite the favorable diagnosis of catching the cancer early, the surprising fight with insurance came before the battle with cancer can even begin.
After appeals and an external review, the insurance company, Cigna, has rejected coverage for the proton therapy that the doctor recommended. He will have to pay for the treatment which is between $160-200K. He needs to make a 60% down payment to begin treatment, so the goal is $120,000. This has been a huge source of stress and uncertainty, and it's also causing a delay to treatment.
Jonathan will not be able to work while going through treatment, and his wife Cecilia will be taking care of him during this time, so financial help for the therapy would allow his savings to be used only for his day to day expenditures during his treatment and recovery. Any donations will go to Jonathan's bank account to help him raise the amount needed to begin treatment. The longer it takes, the more risk there is of the cancer getting worse.
While the focus is on monetary donations, another option is zero-interest loans to be repaid over a 5-10 year period. A suggested amount is $10,000.
