As you may know (and it's likely you do because how else would you have gotten here?), I run a somewhat popular (if not particularly lucrative) blog, Trout Nation. I absolutely love what I do and the community that has sprung up there.
Unfortunately, just running a blog doesn't provide you with a deep understanding of what constitutes fair use; operating under a misconception of how much an image has to be altered to be protected as parody, I used a photograph without proper licensing.
But ignorance isn't a legal defense and as a result, I'm now facing either a costly lawsuit or a settlement, both of which I cannot afford. I'm raising money now to cover the out of court settlement (which I need ASAP) and other legal fees. If you can help me out, even with a few bucks, I would very much appreciate it. And if you can't, just spreading the word will help!
I'll be blogging about this soon, but in the meantime, authors! Heed my warning! Though most of us would never dream of using unlicensed images on our covers or promotional materials, I know many of you are out there using unlicensed photos on your blogs and Instagrams and the like to share images of who inspired your characters or whatever. Please, read up on fair use of images. Someday, you might grab a random photo of Steve Forbes to make fun of him and then find yourself facing a lawsuit over a picture of a billionaire and you'll be too stressed out to find that grimly funny!
(For the record, none of my characters were inspired by Steve Forbes. Nor is Steve Forbes personally suing me.)
