Jacques' Wish to send four Rwandans to University

Donation protected
This is new for me and I am hesitant, not only because I am not good at asking for money but I am not entirely comfortable with this format. I have seen that some of the more successful campaigns have heart rending stories. I am not good at heart rending and this is a simple request. Jacques, a Rwandan friend, contacted me a few weeks ago and asked if I could find a way to fund the tuition for four Rwanda students at a university in Kigali. I have contributed what I could, but there remains $8500 (Canadian) needed to take the four to the end of their three-year programs. Yes, that’s right. Eighty-five hundred Canadian dollars for tuition for three years for four people sounds cheap, but it is a lot for them.

In 2010, I went to Kigali, Rwanda as a volunteer with Kiva. Determined not to live with other Westerners, I found Jacques and his wife Flo who were looking to rent a room in their home. [I kept a blog at that time that starts  here  for those who might be curious]. After a week, I developed a medical condition and a week after that returned to Canada. Jacques was invaluable to me while dealing with my medical problems and we have remained friends ever since.

                                          Jacques and me in Kigali

Jacques is a computer engineer with a master's degree who works for the government. He, as do many Rwandans, sees education as the means by which Rwanda can grow its economy and lift its people out of poverty. He is constantly encouraging young people to continue their schooling; has funded scholarships to send orphans to boarding school; and co-founded, and helps to run, an after school soccer club that aims to teach life skills to its young participants (see here ). So, it was not surprising when I heard from Jacques that he was looking for financial support for four of his coaches to attend university.

Jacques is a dear friend whom my wife calls my guardian angel for looking after me in Kigali. What is important to him is important to me. This is something that will make a world of difference for the students and be one small way that we in the West can support the development of Rwanda and help Rwandans better themselves, teaching them to fish instead of giving them a fish as the saying goes.

Below are their stories as received and unedited. You will note that the grammar is not great. As well, the more observant may notice that the essays have the same format and some of the same misuse of words. They very well may have had help writing these as English would be their third language. Their mother tongue is Kinyarwanda and the language of education for most of their primary and secondary years would have been French. However, I have 100% confidence that the content is real and factual
