Jack's Plan
Donazione protetta
Thank you for visiting my GoFundMe page. I’m Jack Schnall, a high school senior, and I'm raising money to provide free swim lessons and water safety classes for members of my community on the East End of Long Island, New York.
Swimming is so much fun. Everyone should know how to swim, particularly since we’re surrounded by water.
Swimming is also a great equalizer. As Dara Torres, the record-breaking Olympian, said: “The water doesn’t know how old you are." The water also doesn’t know the color of your skin, your ethnicity or the language you speak.
But the main goal of my GoFundMe is to prevent deaths from drowning. In the summer of 2020, I witnessed a near-drowning incident while I was at work at a marina in Sag Harbor, New York. Five swimmers — including little kids — almost drowned near the North Haven Bridge but were saved by a group of heroic rescuers.
The swimmers, whom none of us knew, all survived, but I wondered how they might be feeling after that traumatic day. I wanted them to feel confident going back in the water, and I wanted us all to come together as a community, so that afternoon would be more than just a cautionary tale. According to the CDC, about ten people die from drowning every day in this country and two of these are children aged 14 or younger.
That's why I started this community service project, which I’m calling Jack’s Plan. Because my plan is to make sure that anyone who wants to learn to swim and/or feel safe around the water will be able to do so — and can afford to do so.
How Jack’s Plan works:
The funds will be distributed on an as-needed basis, to cover swim lessons and water safety classes, including CPR and First Aid, given by accredited organizations such as the American Red Cross Association and the YMCA.
A range of expenses will be covered. For instance, a Red Cross CPR class costs $90, while a nine-week swim class for school-age children at the Y costs $185 and eight semi-private swim lessons (for 2 to 3 participants) at the Y costs $830.
The funds may also cover child care and transportation when necessary.
The funds will cover classes in English and Spanish.
Scheduling will depend on the pandemic, and safety will be the priority.
People who would like to be sponsored for swim lessons, water safety classes or first aid classes now or in the future can email me at [email modificata][dot]com with their requests. I will help coordinate the classes and cover the costs through my GoFundMe.
