Standing Strong Together: Supporting Tina Tichenor Through Her Cancer Journey!

Dear friends,

Recently, a dear friend received an unexpected diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma, a form of breast cancer.

Her cancer journey began unexpectedly during a routine mammogram in January this year. She had missed her 2023 mammogram due to an insurance debacle. On February 9th, during a work meeting with a client, she received the call confirming her cancer diagnosis.

She took the call, knowing it could be important, received the news, and professionally returned to the meeting without showing any hint of the life-changing news she had just received.

Since then, she has been navigating a whirlwind of doctor's appointments, tests, treatment plans, and surgery. On April 25th, she underwent her first (and hopefully only) surgery, learning it will be followed by radiation and hormone therapy.

The road ahead is understandably daunting, promising both physical and emotional challenges.

While she and her family tackle the medical aspects of her journey, the financial strain of cancer treatment looms large. Even with insurance, the out-of-pocket expenses for treatments, medications, and other necessities are overwhelming. As her friends, we cannot let Tina and her family face this burden alone.

The unspoken aspect of this journey, often overlooked when scheduling appointments and procedures, is the uncertainty surrounding medical costs—even with insurance coverage. This is the reality Tina and her family are facing: the insurance company may say, "You can have your treatment with your provider of choice." So, you stay loyal to the provider who diagnosed the condition, entrusting them with your care. Starting over with a different provider, gathering paperwork, explaining your situation, and establishing rapport, is the last thing you want to do.

Yet, as the bills roll in, you’re left questioning why so little, if anything, is being covered by your insurance. It’s beyond disheartening to learn that despite the insurance company’s assurance of freedom in choosing a provider, the chosen one does not accept your insurance.
