We are a team of passionate high schoolers representing Irvington High School. We have taken on the challenge of designing, building, and launching a CubeSat as part of the IHS Maker Club. This 1-2U CubeSat will orbit Earth, capturing multispectral images for environmental research while testing student-designed propulsion, communications, and attitude control systems. Beyond its technical goals, MakerSat is about proving that young people from public schools can lead real space missions and inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators. With your help, we’ll bring this project to life, put our satellite into space, and show what student-led aerospace can achieve.
About the Mission:
What’s a CubeSat?
A CubeSat is a small, standardized satellite used for scientific experiments in space.
Our Mission Goals:
IHS MakerSat is a 1-2U CubeSat mission designed by the IHS Maker Club, a student-led space systems engineering team from Irvington High School. The satellite aims to demonstrate modular, student-developed space systems while conducting an Earth observation experiment.
The mission’s primary payload will capture multispectral images for environmental monitoring and disaster response analysis. Additionally, IHS MakerSat will serve as a platform for future low-cost propulsion and communications technology demonstrations, integrating student-built subsystems for:
- Redundant UHF and S-band communications
- Attitude determination and control system (ADCS) for precision pointing
- On-board computer (OBC) management and data-driven embedded applications
Why It Matters:
This mission will empower students, advance small satellite research, and make space more accessible for young innovators.
Budget:
CubeSat Structure: $3,000
Electric Power System: $5,500
On Board COmputer and Communications: $7,300
PayLoad and Camera Module: $4,250
ATtitude Determination and Control System: $1,810
Ground Segment and Radio Licensing: $7,200
Travel: $4,500
contingency (10%): $4,440
Total: $38,000
Timeline:
Design & Prototyping: June 2026
Build & Testing: January 2028
Launch: Late 2028
The mission is designed to support STEM education outreach and provide practical space systems engineering experience for high school students, fostering early-career exposure to aerospace technology development.
