Insurance Won’t Cover K.A.F.O •A Step Towards Independence

Hello,

My name is Jaedyn. Earlier this year, I suffered from a Traumatic Brain Injury that ultimately led to paralysis of my left leg. Because of this, I have been receiving ongoing medical care and treatments to not only regain my strength but to start my road to recovery. After multiple hospitalizations, having to get my new medications regulated, and even having to be resuscitated, I am finally medically stable and comfortable in my own home with my family again. Thankfully, I am receiving a custom-built wheelchair from West Peak Mobility this week on March 26th, 2025, ONE DAY before my birthday, WOOHOO! This is a huge step in giving me more access to my community and freedom when it comes to my autonomy as an individual. Unfortunately, throughout this whole ordeal, I have been given the devastating news that my K.A.F.O will not be covered under our insurance plan. To explain, a K.A.F.O is a Knee Ankle Foot Orthotic that is crucial and a sturdy leg brace to support my leg when learning to walk and increasing my mobility while preventing injuries. As you can tell, this is clearly something I need in order to have independence, safety, and stability to continue with my normal routine and daily activities of life. We have been quoted by the company who custom-made the K.A.F.O for my leg that it comes out to a cost of $1,524. I am hoping by raising the funds I will be able to buy my new leg and give myself the hope that my life as a 23-year-old may finally go back to feeling more normal again. Learning to adapt through all of these changes has been a struggle for myself and for my family, but I find that having strength in myself and faith that I will pull through has brought me tremendous amounts of hope.
