Dario, un ragazzo di venticinque anni, generoso, sensibile, altruista, appassionato di informatica, musica e pieno di sogni. Poi, un giorno, il 18 febbraio del 2024, dopo un attacco di epilessia, della quale soffre da alcuni mesi, cade rovinosamente procurandosi un trauma cranico con ematoma. Viene operato alla testa d’urgenza, presso l’Ospedale San Marco di Catania, lottando tra la vita e la morte, rimanendo in coma per più di un mese.

Dopo l’uscita dal coma, viene traferito presso il reparto risvegli dell’istituto “C. Giglio” di Cefalù. Noi familiari, abbandoniamo tutto per rimanergli accanto e assisterlo in quei momenti difficili.

Dopo quasi un anno viene trasferito al Reparto Neurolesi dell’Istituto Bonino Pulejo di Messina dove attualmente si trova ricoverato.

Il ragazzo è cosciente ma a livello motorio c’è ancora tanto da fare. Non parla, deglutisce con difficoltà e muove solo la mano sinistra con la quale a stento comunica.

Le terapie continuano con amorevole cura dei sanitari, con la nostra vicinanza e con la sua forza di volontà.

Presumibilmente, dopo l’estate, dovremo portare il ragazzo a casa. Glielo abbiamo promesso. E’ stanco, troppo mesi in ospedale, troppe sofferenze.

Per riaverlo con noi bisogna affrontare molte spese: fornire casa di un montascale, sostituire gli infissi ormai fatiscenti, adeguare il bagno alla sua condizione, sostituire la nostra autovettura con una specifica per il trasporto disabili e continuare con le terapie molte delle quali a nostro carico.

Dario is a 25-year-old young man—generous, sensitive, altruistic, passionate about computers and music, and full of dreams.

Then, one day—on February 18, 2024—he suffered an epileptic seizure, a condition he had been struggling with for a few months. He fell violently, sustaining a traumatic brain injury with a hematoma. He underwent emergency brain surgery at San Marco Hospital in Catania, fighting for his life and remaining in a coma for over a month.

After waking from the coma, he was transferred to the awakening unit at the “C. Giglio” Institute in Cefalù. As his family, we left everything behind to be by his side during these incredibly difficult moments.

After nearly a year, he was moved to the Neurorehabilitation Department of the Bonino Pulejo Institute in Messina, where he is currently hospitalized.

Dario is now conscious, but he still has a long way to go to maximize and improve his physical abilities. He cannot speak, swallows with difficulty, and can only move his left hand, which he uses—with great effort—to communicate.

Therapies continue with the loving care of the medical staff, our constant presence, and his incredible willpower.

Presumably, after the summer, we will have to bring Dario home—we promised him that. He is tired. Too many months in hospitals, too much suffering.

To welcome him back home, we must face many expenses: installing a stairlift, replacing old and damaged windows, adapting the bathroom to his condition, purchasing a vehicle suitable for transporting people with disabilities, and continuing with many therapies, some of which are not covered by the healthcare system.
