Help Us Move to a Safer Home

Update: After I managed to get together enough to pay the deposit to transfer to a different unit in my current complex, they tacked on an additional $1000. No reason, no explanation. Just you need to pay us $1930, on top of the $1000 security deposit we paid when we moved in, and they want $885 for the carpeting in our current unit.

I applied for a new apartment, and was declined. They didn't say why, but I lost the $75 application fee, and they have 30 days to refund my $200 deposit.

The legal aid lawyer sent an email to my current property management, letting them know that instead of the in-house transfer, I want my reasonable accommodation to be that they release me from the lease this month, without charging me any penalties.

They never responded. I logged in to my resident portal today and found that I owe $2875, which is the break lease amount, not my rent for April.

We've been trying to move from an apartment with many stairs both inside and outside the unit, to one that has no stairs as a reasonable accommodation for my physical condition since December 24. After much back and forth with the property management, they are requiring an additional security deposit for us to move. We don't have that much extra, as well as being able to cover rent next month. I've already had 2 slips and one fall on the stairs, and am still in physical therapy partially due to one of those. I'm afraid that if we can't move, I'll end up getting hurt badly enough that I won't be able to work anymore and support my kid and I.
